Sustainability community loses one of its great champions
Dear ABIS friends and colleagues,
It is with the heaviest of hearts that we write today to share the tragic news that Nigel Roome, the longstanding Academic Chair of ABIS and one of the most influential figures in our field for over 30 years, has passed away after a long fight against cancer.
Nigel’s vision, intellect and scholarship were profoundly influential in so many areas: shaping the strategic ambitions of global companies, informing and guiding international policy makers, and inspiring young researchers to embark on scientific careers that, taken together, would move society towards a more sustainable future. All of the above was grounded in his personal willingness to mentor and support others who shared his belief in our collective potential, and to do so with unfailing humanity, compassion and humour.
His family has asked us to inform you that his funeral will take place at 15:45 UK time on MONDAY, 8 FEBRUARY – at the Seven Hills Crematorium near his home in Ipswich, UK – and to extend an open invitation to anyone who may wish to attend. A reception will follow at Nigel’s home (address: 2 The Courts, Playford, Ipswich IP6 9DR).
In order to support his family in these sorrowful times, we invite anyone who would like to attend to send an email to Dr. Mario Pansera before Thursday close of business. We will be able to provide final details of the service on Friday, and also inform Nigel’s family of likely numbers.
It goes without saying that we will explore ways of honouring Nigel’s legacy in a more permanent way in the weeks to come. For now, however, we wish to acknowledge the passing of a towering figure and dear friend, and to invite you to extend your prayers and sympathies to his loved ones at this difficult time.
